GTA 6 Trailers Explained: What Trailer 1 and 2 Actually Showed
✦ Last updated August 30, 2026
GTA 6 has two official trailers, and both are the most-watched game trailers in history. Trailer 1 landed in December 2023 and introduced Leonida, Vice City and the two protagonists. Trailer 2 arrived in May 2025 with all in-game footage and a 24-hour viewership figure that Rockstar described as the biggest video launch of all time. A third trailer has not been released.

Side by side
| Trailer 1 | Trailer 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Release | December 4-5, 2023 | May 6, 2025 |
| First-day views | ~90 million | 475 million |
| Cumulative | 268 million by Nov 2025 | — |
| Footage type | Cinematic reveal | All in-game footage |
| Recorded on | — | PlayStation 5 |
| Runtime | 1:31 | 2:47 |
| Music | — | Four tracks |
| Awards | Three Guinness records | Best Game Trailer, Golden Joystick 2025 |
The cumulative figure for Trailer 1 (268 million by November 2025) is the number to use rather than older "250 million+" approximations. Trailer 2's 24-hour figure of 475 million remains the headline statistic.
Trailer 1 — December 4-5, 2023
Trailer 1 was released earlier than planned because a leak forced Rockstar's hand. That origin shapes how it should be read: it is a reveal built to establish setting and tone rather than to demonstrate systems.
What it established:
- Leonida, the fictional Florida setting, and the return of Vice City.
- The two protagonists, Lucia and Jason, shown as a pair rather than as a single lead.
- The in-game social-media parody that became one of the most-discussed details.
- A visual register — sun-bleached, satirical, contemporary — that distinguished it from the series' previous entries.
It ran 1:31 and drew roughly 90 million views in 24 hours, earning three Guinness records and eventually becoming the most-viewed game trailer on YouTube.
Trailer 2 — May 6, 2025
Trailer 2 is the more important of the two for anyone judging what the game actually is, because it was officially confirmed as all in-game footage recorded on PlayStation 5.
| What Trailer 2 added | Detail |
|---|---|
| Full protagonist names | Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos |
| Supporting cast | Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy), Raul Bautista, Brian Heder |
| Tone | A Bonnie-and-Clyde shape to the central relationship |
| Production detail | Four music tracks |
| Recognition | Best Game Trailer, Golden Joystick 2025 |
"The Biggest Video Launch of All Time" — Rockstar's statement on the Trailer 2 video launch (source: Rockstar video-launch statement, 2025-05-06).
The 475 million views in 24 hours is the figure that made the trailer a news story in its own right, independent of the game. Note that this is a views-in-24-hours record, not a cumulative total, and the two are frequently conflated in coverage.
What the trailers confirmed about the world
Between them, the two trailers and the official material around them established the shape of GTA 6's setting. This is the content the trailers are most reliable for.
| Element | Status |
|---|---|
| Leonida (fictional Florida) | Confirmed |
| Vice City | Confirmed as a location |
| Grassrivers, Leonida Keys, Ambrosia | Confirmed regions |
| Mount Kalaga National Park, Port Gellhorn | Confirmed regions |
| Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos | Confirmed protagonists |
| Map size | Reported at roughly three times Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area (not an official measurement) |
The map-size figure is the one item in that table that is a report rather than an official statement. Treat it as an indication, not a specification.
What the trailers did not show
Being clear about absence prevents a lot of bad expectations:
- No PC version. Both trailers were console-focused, and no PC platform has been announced. See our PC release tracker.
- No 60fps mode. 30fps across all platforms at launch is the confirmed performance target.
- No microtransactions or generative AI. Rockstar confirmed the absence of both in late August 2026 (reported August 29, 2026) — a statement about the game, not something visible in the trailers.
- No date for a third trailer. Official response to Trailer 3 questions has been reported as "wait".
Trailer 3?
Not released. Community expectation previously pointed at September-October 2026, but no official window exists. Netflix's "An Extended Look" (around August 27, 2026) contains 26:48 of gameplay and has been widely read as the de-facto gameplay reveal without being labeled a third trailer. We track the distinction on our Trailer 3 page.
How to read future trailers
Two habits keep trailer coverage honest:
Separate recorded footage from cinematics. Trailer 2's value came from the official confirmation that it was all in-game and captured on PS5. When that confirmation is absent, treat footage as unverified for in-game representation.
Separate records from meaning. A high view count measures marketing reach, not game quality. The 475 million figure is impressive and tells you nothing about how the game plays.
For the underlying marketing sequence rather than the trailers themselves, our official timeline lists every dated official beat in order.
Common misconceptions
"Trailer 2 was CGI." No. It was officially confirmed as all in-game footage recorded on PlayStation 5.
"Trailer 1 broke the 24-hour record that Trailer 2 later broke." Both set records of different kinds: Trailer 1 earned three Guinness records and became the most-viewed game trailer on YouTube; Trailer 2 set the biggest video launch of all time at its release.
"The Extended Look is Trailer 3." It is a 26:48 Netflix special. Calling it Trailer 3 is a media framing choice, not an official label.
"The trailers confirmed a PC version." They did not. The PC version is confirmed separately, and it is undated.
