GTA 6 Map Guide: Leonida, Vice City and Every Confirmed Region
✦ Last updated August 30, 2026
GTA 6 takes place in the state of Leonida — a fictional version of Florida — with Vice City returning as its urban centrepiece. Official material names six distinct regions across the state. What Rockstar has not published is a map size figure, which is why any "GTA 6 map size" number you see quoted is either an estimate or leak-derived. This page covers only the confirmed geography.

The confirmed regions
Leonida was named in Trailer 1 (December 2023). Vice City's return was confirmed across both trailers and the 26-minute Netflix "An Extended Look" on August 27, 2026. Beyond the city, official material names five further locations:
| Region | Type | What official material indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | City | The urban core and the series' 2002 setting, rebuilt for Leonida |
| Leonida Keys | Island chain | Florida Keys equivalent, to the south of the mainland |
| Grassrivers | Wetland interior | Swamp and marshland terrain, used for off-road travel |
| Ambrosia | Named locale | A separate named settlement/area within the state |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Parkland | Inland national park, the state's elevated terrain |
| Port Gellhorn | Coastal settlement | Industrial port area on the coast |
The naming pattern is deliberate: Leonida reads as a Florida analogue, the Keys mirror the real Florida Keys, and Grassrivers corresponds to the Everglades. Rockstar is building a state, not a city — which is the single biggest structural difference from every previous GTA map except San Andreas.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar has not published a playable-area figure. The number that circulates most often is that Leonida is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable region. That figure comes from published reporting, not from a Rockstar spec sheet, so we label it as reported rather than confirmed.
Here is how GTA 6 sits against the series in relative terms, using the community-relative index where GTA V's map equals 100:
| Game | Setting | Relative map index | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA III (2001) | Liberty City | ≈15 | Community estimate |
| Vice City (2002) | Vice City | ≈20 | Community estimate |
| San Andreas (2004) | San Andreas | ≈80 | Community estimate |
| GTA IV (2008) | Liberty City | ≈25 | Community estimate |
| GTA V (2013) | Los Santos & Blaine County | 100 | Reference point |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | Five states + New Hanover | ≈110 | Community estimate |
| GTA VI (2026) | Leonida | Not published | Reported ≈3× RDR2's playable region |
Two honest caveats. First, larger has never meant better in this series — GTA IV's Liberty City is the smallest HD-era map and remains the most densely detailed. Second, a state-sized map raises a real question Rockstar has not answered publicly: how much of it is mission-critical versus open terrain. San Andreas answered that with three cities and countryside between them; on the evidence so far, Leonida looks like a similar structure with a much larger countryside.
The Vice City difference
The 2002 Vice City was two islands and a beach, built in about a year on the GTA III engine. The 2026 version sits inside a full state. What official material shows of the city itself:
- Coastal and beachfront areas, consistent with the original's Miami-inspired look
- A working nightlife and entertainment district — the Extended Look showed a strip club among other venues
- An in-game television and advertising layer, with satirical fake ads (one name surfaced in coverage: "Angstipan")
- An in-game social media app in the Snapmatic lineage, which implies photographable locations throughout the map
If you played the 2002 game, the nostalgia hook is explicit this time: the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus is a direct reference to that era, and the limited-edition DualSense controllers are themed around Vice City by day and by night.
What you can actually do out there
The August 27, 2026 Netflix Extended Look ran 26 minutes and was captured on PS5 — this is the most detailed official look at the world to date. Activities visible in it:
| Activity type | Confirmed examples |
|---|---|
| Combat | Cover shooting with handguns and shotguns, slow-motion kills, vehicle-mounted shooting, melee with QTE prompts |
| Traversal | Swimming, off-road motorcycles, boats, diving and skydiving |
| Sports & leisure | Basketball, gyms, strip clubs, street racing |
| Crime | Store robberies (a pharmacy was shown), plus the weapon radial menu for throwables |
| Systems | In-game text messages between the two protagonists, fast travel implied by their ability to split up |
The two-protagonist split matters for the map specifically: because Jason and Lucia can operate independently, Leonida is designed to support two simultaneous locations rather than one player position. That is a structural assumption about the map, not just a story feature.
What is not confirmed
Being precise about the gaps is more useful than filling them with rumour:
- Map size in square kilometres or miles — never published by Rockstar
- Number of explorable interiors — not stated
- Whether the full state is available from the start or unlocked through the story — not stated
- Fast travel and public transport systems — not detailed
- Whether the map expands after launch — not announced
Why we do not publish leak maps
Community projects have built detailed interactive maps of Leonida from leaked material. We do not reproduce, embed or link to those maps, and there is a practical reason on top of the legal one: leaked builds are unfinished, and the leak-derived map that circulated in August 2026 predated the Netflix reveal by nine days. Building expectations on unfinished geometry produces the "downgrade" arguments that follow every Rockstar release.
Our editorial rule is simple: official material only. If a location has not appeared in a trailer, the official site, the Extended Look or an on-record developer interview, it does not go on this page as fact. You can see the full official announcement sequence on our official timeline, and the series history for how Leonida compares to Liberty City, San Andreas and Los Santos.

FAQ
Is GTA 6 set in Vice City or in Leonida?
Both. Leonida is the state — a fictional Florida — and Vice City is the city inside it. Think of the relationship between San Andreas the state and Los Santos the city in GTA V.
How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?
Rockstar has not said. Reporting has compared the playable area to roughly three times Red Dead Redemption 2's playable region, which sits slightly above GTA V in the community-relative index. There is no official square-mile figure.
Is the whole map a city, or is there countryside?
There is substantial countryside. Official material names a wetland interior (Grassrivers), an island chain (Leonida Keys), national parkland (Mount Kalaga) and a coastal port (Port Gellhorn) alongside Vice City.
Will the leaked map be accurate?
Nobody outside Rockstar can answer that. The leak-derived map that appeared in August 2026 was built from an unfinished build and was circulated before the official Extended Look. We do not treat it as a source.
Can I visit locations from the 2002 Vice City?
The city returns, and the pre-order bonus is explicitly a 2002-era reference. Whether specific 2002 landmarks are recreated one-to-one has not been confirmed by Rockstar.
