The physical edition's preload limitation is the single most practical difference: a boxed buyer cannot stage the download until the box arrives and the code is redeemed, which can push day-one play into day-two for slow connections.
The scalper problem
Because the physical edition contains a code rather than a disc, resellers cannot separate the "collectible" value from the product value. Reporting (TweakTown, 2026) has documented physical copies resold above list price, with figures in the $120+ range.
The arithmetic is unflattering. Paying $120 for a box whose only functional content is a download code means paying roughly $40 above list price for packaging, when the identical game is $79.99 from the platform store.
Practical rules:
- Check the platform store price first. It is the reference price, and it is fixed.
- Treat any listing above list price as a markup, not scarcity. Supply is not limited in any announced way.
- Never buy a "PC key" for GTA 6. No PC version has a release date, so no legitimate PC key exists.
- Prefer stores you can get a refund from. Platform storefronts have documented refund policies; auction listings generally do not.

Should you buy Standard or Ultimate
The decision reduces to three questions:
- Do you want the extras the Ultimate tier includes? If not, the $20 is pure loss.
- Will you play long enough to use them? Launch-period extras that assume dozens of hours of play have less value if you tend to finish a story and move on.
